As the wireshark wiki states, it's not good to run Wireshark as root because
the packet analysers may be insecure. The proper way to do this is to use:
sudo dumpcap -w dumpfile
And then open the dumpfile in wireshark. You can optionally include "-i
eth0" in the dumpcap command to select the right
I forgot to mention that this bug began when I upgraded to Hardy.

I also had an issue with this bug. Wireshark worked fine for me in
Gutsy. The issues I experienced are Wireshark would freeze (turn grey)
when choosing an interface. I launched it from the command line by
switching to root, issuing 'su', then running Wireshark. I was able to
sniff packets fine, but
I can confirm all above.

Same for me ...
I've upgraded from 7.10 where wireshark runs perfectly. On 8.04 there is no run
as root on menu, and gksu or gksudo hangs app. sudo does the job.

Confirmed.
Exactly same thing here. Wireshark with gksudo (and gksu) fails, sudo
works.
Using:
Linux Valmar 2.6.24-16-generic #1 SMP Thu Apr 10 13:23:42 UTC 2008 i686
GNU/Linux
and

How did you start the app? Was it via the menu or command line? Did
you run as a normal user or as root?
This is likely a duplicate of 198884. Is it okay if I mark it as such?
On my system I edited the menu command to "gksudo wireshark" and the
application became unresponsive (went grey) when
