1. I downloaded the amd64 alternate cd image

gksu "sh /cdrom/cdromupgrade"
what happens, the distribution upgrade window opens up, and the bar
moves, but hangs before reaching completion, on the first step
(preparing upgrade, checking package manager)
The window stops responding, and the apt-cache gets locked.
I'm attaching the contents of /var/log/dist-upgrade/
