I also have a sony vaio and have experienced the same issues. If I
remove splash quiet (i.e. boots without spash screen) - I don't have
issues.

install via this but the same error above came up after the kernal

Sadly I have had to reinstall 7.10 in order to use my laptop, the problems I
was experiencing made it an unpleasant experience.
Just to note, I used the same cd-rom to install Hardy onto my other laptop, a 3
year old Toshiba Equium EA60-199 and everything went to plan. Compiz does not
work

Tried a fresh install
Booted up and then hit 'F6' in the install screen. Added 'acpi = off' to
the end of the line. Pressed enter. Laptop then booted up into the Live
CD environment.
From there I installed Hardy Heron. Selected 'manual' for the partitions
as I have separate partitions for '/'

this with no problems.
