I downloaded and installed the 8.10 Release Candidate and could not
reproduce this bug.
I also booted off a 8.10 Live CD (25-Oct-2008 08:26) and could not
reproduce this bug.

Right now the visual artifacts still exist.
My guess is that the ATI drivers are the problem.
I can't give you any outputs right now, because I'm not in Ubuntu, but I'll try
to remember doing so.
I tried installing the latest ATI drivers before, but that did not help.

I just installed the latest ATI driver (ati-driver-
installer-8-5-x86.x86_64.run) from http://ati.amd.com (Support & Drivers
> Download graphics drivers >Linux x86 > FireGL > Mobility FireGL V5000)
and I can not reproduce this bug.
Instructions for installing the ATI driver:
1. sudo ./ati-driver-i
Same here, and with about every first-year student on TU/e.
We use Lenovo T60p (IBM).
It includes a FireGL too, (I don't know the version from the top of my head)
and get exactly the same problem.
