I have the same problem.
Ubuntu 8.04 64bits / 4GB RAM / Wubi / ATI proprietary driver = black screen.
Tried again yesterday and got a white screen.

This is not an ATi issue.
Same problem with nVidia & 4GB of RAM, also caused by MTRR issues

Same issues here, VESA works fine; Ubuntu's fglrx drivers don't work;
and manually installing the latest 8.5 drivers from ATi doesn't work
either.
Specs:
E6750 on an ASUS Maximus Formula
4GB DDR2 RAM

I'm having a similar issue with a Dell Optiplex 755 with 4gb and an
amd64 install of Hardy. The installed video card is an ATI hd2400xt
with 256mb. Using the fglrx driver results in an immediate crash at the
start of X with 4gb in the machine. Remove 1 stick of ram (leaving 3gb)
and all is well.
