it looks like the latest version does not suffer from this bug at all.
I'm not sure what version is in Hardy at the moment bug you were running
a fairly old version and unstable version. Please update bug with
version you are now using of firefox and of firebug

Workaround: I removed extensions.rdf in my profile folder. When I
restarted FF2, Firebug became available.
