I gave, changed gutsy-hardy in /etc/apt/sources.list and sudo apt-get
update apt-get upgrade and everything went smoothly...

Alternatively doing a network-upgrade from Gutsy (7.10) to Hardy (8.04)
by using the »alternate cd install« works fine.

The output of the file looks good - so you don't see a upgrade button
even with the latest update-manager from gutsy-updates? Is there any
output when you run update-manager on a terminal window? Does the file
/home/egon/.update-manager-core/meta-release contain a reference to
hardy?

release does not contain any reference to hardy.

Normally pressing check in update-manager should make the button
appear.

I also have no upgrade option. I've been running the vanilla gutsy 7.10
on my IBM thinkpad T42. I have not modified the package manager in any
way. The update manager simply says everything is up-to-date.
