You are right: I checked preferred applications and Firefox was not
there for web urls. After setting firefox there, all the urls work fine
from terminal.

My terminal seems to open links fine through right mouse click.
Have you checked your settings under your preferred applications to see if
firefox is set up as the web browser and if "open link with default web
browser" is checked? Also, have you checked if your default browser is working
