I have the same problem. In Ubuntu 8.04, it works with blacklist
video, but after upgrading to Ubuntu 8.10 with 2.6.27 kernel, I would
get a black/blank screen when going into KDE.

I can confirm that since latest updates two virtual backlight devices
are created in /sys/devices/virtual/backlight. Both seems to be
functional.
Would downgrading bios version potentially be a workaround?

In Intrepid with the today update,
the brightness now change by 2 levels for pressing instead of 3 levels.

Two additions to my previous comment:
The original bug involved the nvidia nVidia 8400M GS chip, I am
experiencing the bug on a Dell XPS 1330 with intel x3100 integrated
card.
The blacklisting of the video module, which now is not working anymore
as a temporary fix, was never an optimal solution
The same as Guido said.
But i have nVidia 8400GS.
If someone need output, I'm here for any test.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the
upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would
appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel.
There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

Hm. So why do both hald-addon-dell AND the video kernel module allow
brightness changing in the first place? That seems a bit backwards.

You received this bug notification because
Workaround works great until kde power applet is loaded (and no
brightness level reported). Then adjustment only works if I press keys
once in several seconds, I.e. pressing FN-down three times in row has
effect of only single press, (if I keep pressing, presses will only take
effect once in
I can confirm this, seeing the same on my dell xps m1330.
