I too am experiencing the same behavior in Hardy after installing the
kubuntu-kde4-desktop package and attempting to run kde 4. In hardy it
seems that this package is version 4.0.3 however so I don't have the fix
as yet. The workaround of just doing
sudo rm -rf ~/.kde4/share/config/session
didn't

Anyway, the strange thing is that apparently this issue would only
appear when the session file is missing, so either the file did not get
created, it got created somewhere else or it doesn't have the

Is there any update on this issue? My workstation (AMD, x86_64, NVidia
video card) has been exhibiting the same issue for quite a while too.
Is there any additional debugging information anyone needs?

I removed the following line from ~/.kde/share/config/ksmserverrc which
appears to rectify the problem.
program1=kwin
This has to be done before each log in as per deleting same above.
Suggests that perhaps it shouldn't be recording kwin?

I can confirm this bug -- I'm running KDE 4.0.3 on amd64 and had to
switch to emerald to "get back" the window decorations.

Please copy your ~/.kde4/share/config/ksmserverrc file to somewhere save
... _after_ logging out and _before_ starting a broken session
The tricky part about this issue is that kwin is actualyl blacklisted
for session management if I recall correctly.

Please force a break and take a look at .xsession-errors
It should provide further information on why this is happening, if not, try
with kdebase-workspace-dbg installed.
Currently I think the issue might be caused by some session conflict,
but we defenitely need more information.
