Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg-driver-fglrx

System summary:
IBM ThinkPad T42
Video card: RV350 [Mobility Radeon 9600 M10]
Ubuntu Hardy final.

During my attempt to switch to the fglrx binary video driver, I encountered
several problems.
I installed the required packages and did "depmod -a"
My xorg.conf file is attached.

First, the kernel module "/lib/modules/2.6.24-16-generic/volatile/fglrx.ko"
does not load automatically.
It can only be loaded with an explicit "insmod" command. Note that modprobe
fails to load it.

Now, after the module is loaded manually, I can log in into my gnome session
(including compiz)
in 50% cases.
In the other 50% cases my system freezes to death after gdm login (while
loading the gnome session)
and need to be reset with the power button.
However, when logged in successfully, everything works well, I get 3d
acceleration and compiz working.
But, when I log out, I also get system freeze periodically.

Seems like a bug in either fglrx or compiz.
I do not attach the Xorg.0.log file as it seems quite useless here.

One more problem (I do not know if it is related to the above or not) -
when starting compiz from a console window "compiz --replace"
and then pressing Ctrl - Z there, the system freezes and needs a hard reboot.

** Affects: linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24 (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
