I havn't runned kde4/intrepid in this environment. And the problem
disapeared when the nis server started to work again.
In other words I cannot repeat the problem without the faulty nis server
(running hp-ux)...

I guess we can assume that it was a server-side configuration issue.
If you should stumble upon such an issue again, I suggest you report it
at http://bugs.kde.org since issues with NFS/NIS are most likely in KDE
itself and not a Kubuntu specific change. :)
