In the new beta-release of ubuntu, the problem is gone. However in
kubuntu kde4 crashes when starting. I will submit a new bugreport.

I'm not sure if my issue is the same, but if i log out of the only
active account, I get a black screen, with evidently no way to get back
to X. Soft reboot is not possible, so far as I can tell. If I have two
accounts open and log out of one, I get the login screen, as I imagine I
should.
