Public bug reported:

I'm currently running Ubuntu 8.04 and my laptop's (Sony VGN-N11M/W) LCD
screen brightness is quite low now even though it's been great on Heron.
You can see a photo of my screen http://twitxr.com/image/38824 which
shows my laptop screen in the foreground and my second external monitor
in the background.

When I switch the laptop off and then back on again I have the same
problem, I have looked at the BIOS screen and other Linux Live CD's and
they are affected by the same problem. This is not the first time this
has happened, It happened about 2 weeks ago, that time I thought the
backlight had gone so I ordered a new screen off eBay and replaced it
myself. You can see the screen I purchased from here
http://snurl.com/26t6g .

With the new screen in place it didn't make any difference at first
however slowly over a day or so the screen brightness returned back to
normal.

Observations just before the problem occurred
------------------------------------------------------------

I witnessed in both incidents that my laptop was struggling to cope with
running all the VirtualBox machines at the same time. The hard disk was
disk thrashing and the system was very unresponsive, the next thing I
noticed was the screen brightness being reduced about 2 or 3 times. It
was almost as if the system was going into battery mode, however I had
not unplugged the AC power cable.

I was running a dual-monitor setup at the time with an xorg.conf that I
had hacked together from a prvious xorg.conf that I had happily used for
about aq year. I'm currently running a default xorg.conf just to be on
the safe side you can see that below:

see attached file listings.txt

I have tried changing the brightness from the command-line with a few
utilities (I can't remember the name of them now) however it didn't
change a thing. I have also checked the values under Power Manager in
gconf-editor and everything seemed as it should be.
