Just as a note, I tried to reproduce on my Ubuntu 12.04 x64 setup
(2009-15) by intentionally reconfiguring my $HOME with usermod. I did
not notice any slowdown - so either texlive became tolerant of this or
my laptop is too fast to notice the extra work...

I am currently checking whether a trailing slash in $HOME should even be
valid. From what I'm seeing, it isn't / shouldn't be, as such a trailing
slash does change the behaviour of more programs than texlive.

Hi guys,
I really notice this issue as bug as latex system. And this is not the
configuration issue (!), because all other 'standard' app (from ubuntu stable
repos) are working ok with extra '/' character at $home var.
I fixed this issue by removing extra '/' character as well, but I think this i

I'll mark this "invalid" as it was discovered to be a configuration

computer is fast to begin with).

The extra "/" causes your $TEXMFHOME to contain //, making TeX search
your entire $HOME recursively for each file you open. Bad idea. Please
don't configure your system this way.
Can anyone close this bug?

Get the same issue on Ubuntu 10.10 and texlive 2009-10, and I have extra
"/" in $HOME variable. Installation of texlive takes about 1.5 hours,
and compilation of sample tex file takes about 5 minutes. The removing
of extra "/" fixes the problem.

I found the reason: $HOME was set to "/home/PCNAME/USERNAME/". The extra
"/" caused the problem! With $HOME="/home/PCNAME/USERNAME", Latex works
fast again!

Thanks for the quick answer!
No, my home is not on NIS and I did not change any TEXMF settings. My
$HOME is correctly set to /home/PCNAME/USERNAME. But the funny thing is,
there are no texmf config files in $HOME. In particular, the ".texmf-
var" directory is missing, for whatever reason.
