xinitrc does not seem to make a difference in my case.

After a while testing the ssh-agent workaround I have to say that it *does not*
work.
It is harder to get the hanging, but it still happens.
The problem is still there.

seems to be the same issue. The workaround (to disable ssh-agent lines
in /etc/xdg/xfce4/xinitrc) works for me too.

I can confirm this bug but after retrying several times, it started
working automatically. I did not login in to gnome to solve this. I
tried this with a second account and had the same results. Further
investigation is required.
