I had this exact same bug on Mac OS X 10.4.11 with CPAN 1.7601 and Perl
5.8.6:
Deep recursion on subroutine "Compress::Zlib::AUTOLOAD" at
/Library/Perl/5.8.6/darwin-thread-multi-2level/Compress/Zlib.pm line 87
I fixed it by updating Compress::Zlib from the cpan shell:
cpan> install Compress::Zl
