Yes, karmic deals with this very nicely (though now I suffer from

It's quite simple to do that in Karmic at least, just go to Sound
preferences and select the right profile there. I've own a 5.1 sound
system and that works awesome with that, does it works ok for you?

I have a 4.1 speaker system using an old audigy sound card, and I can
confirm that this still happens in Ubuntu 9.04.
