If you just want to see which packages are present (which I infer from
your comment in bug 384785 is basically what you were trying to do),
then look at the .manifest file alongside the .iso image.

I notice that the source directory has been completely removed for
Mythbuntu, which is cool I guess. The Kubuntu-kde4-8.04.1-src and
Xubuntu-8.04.1-src are still empty.
Since the Kubuntu-kde4 went away with 8.10 that problem has gone away in
8.10. The only funky thing left is the Xubuntu-8.10-sr
Also, Mackenzie, who made this decision? I don't recall ever hearing of
it and would have expected to have done so. Furthermore it isn't in line
with the rest of Ubuntu and there is no reason to diverge for particular
flavours.

Yeah, as an active member of the cdimage team, I can't say I agree with
Mackenzie - this absolutely looks like a mistake, not something
deliberate. (However I'm on holiday for the next couple of weeks so
somebody else will have to investigate if they want it fixed before I
get back.)

Call me crazy, but it seems like it would make more sense to just not
put a source .iso file out there if you aren't releasing one, rather
than putting an empty one?

They're not supposed to be there. The decision was made not to make
.iso's of the source code since the source code is all available
separately.
