I can add that in kernel 2.6.27-7 the same thing happens with the sound but it
quickly unfreezes like if the memory was full for a short instant. It happens
if there is a sound playing and if a program is opening, for example.

I have an IBM thinkpad X31. I had Gutsy 7.04 and everything was just
perfect. Since its end of life I have been looking for the best release
for me.
I went directly to the latest release 9.04 where I had a lot of problems,
