Upstream is working on a package split so instead of just removing their
RAR stuff, Debian can put it in Non-free and we can put it in Multiverse.
It may show up in 0.95, but no promises.

I guess two workarounds one could use would be to:
* Try to get clamav to add back the ability to use external scanners
* Write a separate script on one's system that first decompresses the rar
archive to /tmp using the separate unrar application, have clam scan that dir,
and then remove the temp
it's already fixed in Intrepid and later.

The clamav package description field claims clamav supports the RAR
format. Ubuntu's clamav does not support RAR. Will someone fix the
description field?

Bugs,
clamav dropped the ability to use external scanners in 0.93 and later
and the internal RAR code is not licensed in a way suitable for the main
archive. As a result, there is no way to fix this bug.

I experience the same behavior, clamav does not detect a virus in a rar
file. I tested against the testfiles in clamav-testfiles
My packages:
# apt-cache policy rar unrar libclamav3 clamav clamav-testfiles

This is a regression in functionality vs the prior stable releases of
ClamAV

Acutally clamscan --unrar=/usr/bin/unrar filename works just fine for
me, so I'm not sure what is the problem you are having, but rar scanning
with an external unrar package does work.

Agreed. I've finally gotten a chance to test this myself and I see the

You need to install one of the unrar packages. The RAR code that clamav
distributes is removed from the Debian and Ubuntu clamav packages due to
its licensing not meeting the criteria in the Debian Free Software
Guidelines.
