Did you have a chance to try using the NetworkManager from PPA, or from
the latest release of Ubuntu (9.10)?
As mentioned above, setting Authmode is probably not required. You
should instead (on a recent NetworkManager, 0.7 or 0.8) try to set the
password, group password, or both to
Could you try the latest version from the Network Manager team PPA?

Try it with configuring the group password, and setting the user
password as unused.
