It looks like this bug is probably actually a bug, yes regex is on by
default but it should be treating eg 'A+' not as a function as far as I
can tell, I will forward this as a separate bug to the one that was
previously closed invalid.

Ok, I answer to myself:
Looking at http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=44295
it seems not a bug. Disabling regexp in expressions it works as expected
by me (although going thru Tools->Options->Calc->Calculate does not
suffice; you have to close/reload the sheet to have it working).
