I am experiencing the same issue (I guess). I run the standard Hardy 8.04 with
Gnome. Everything is standard, I keep my system up-to-date and no visual
effects are enabled.
The save/save as dialog box causes any application to crash, the key shortcuts
work fine though.
/var/crash is empty.

Have you enabled apport? In /etc/default/apport, there should be
'enabled=1'. Once enabled, try to replicate the crash. There should be a
file in /var/crash then, double click on it and apport will file a new
bug for that.

Blimey, after googling a bit, I found this page:

And the solution works! I removed any suspicious bookmarks and now everything
is working correctly again.
But, this still needs to be fixed properly. I hope this is tracked somewhere...

I can sometimes work around with Ctrl-Alt-Bsp and relogin. Other times
have to reboot. Restarting the app
