[Ubuntu 8.10] Just tried to reproduce it under ru_RU.UTF-8 locale, no
fonts disappearing noticed. Times New Roman and others can be assigned
as usual.

Could you take a screenshot?
Also try to delete your Abiword profile (~/.AbiSuite folder) and check

I opened Abiword and typed some text in Times New Roman. I changed to
Bitstream Vera Sans, typed some more text. I then changed back to Times
New Roman and typed some text.
Perhaps this is a translation issue? My system is set up in English,
United States.

I tried to reproduce this bug using Xubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04 with
Abiword 2.4.6. Is your version 2.6.4 or 2.4.6? I can not reproduce this,
Times New Roman is listed in the fonts menu. What version of Ubuntu are
you using?

I dont have that problem. I have times new roman as default as you say.
Then i select another font. And i can select Times new roman without a
problem.

Ubuntu 8.04, AbiWord 2.6.4 from the repo.
Times New Roman is set by default, you can type text with it, but once
you switch to another font, you cannot change back to Times New Roman.
