Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: lirc

When upgrading to the latest lirc package (0.8.3~pre1-0ubuntu7.1), the
/etc/lirc/lircd.conf is moved to lircd.conf.dpkg-old, and is replaced with a
new, empty config file... I don't know if it is by design, but this behaviour
results in a broken lirc.
I would expect, if a not empty config file is present, to keep it as the active
config file, and that the new - empty - config file to be renamed to something
like "lirc.conf.new-dpkg"...
