Just tried this with Karmic Alpha 2, and there's no mention of not using
encryption any more.
I still can't connect though, but that's a separate issue.

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in
it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try
with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are
available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .
If it remains an issue,
most likely a driver issue for ad-hoc mode. maybe intrepid works better
in this regards?

Unfortunately the Intrepid LiveCD won't even boot on that machine due to
bug 273775 :-(, so I can't say :-(.

network doesn't work for me at all. Many others are affected as well:

Note that doing Connect to another wireless network gives me the following
line in the syslog:
Jun 17 07:41:12 modjox NetworkManager: info Activation (ath0/wireless):
access point 'arrowall' is encrypted, and a key exists. No new key needed.
