Have you tried downgrading libasound2 back to 1.0.15? I.e the version
that was originally in hardy? If so, do you get the same problems?
So far, I am unable to reproduce this bug. I will keep digging however.

Unfortunately, the output of that script didn't state the vesion of the
alsa library are you using. Could you please do the following:
1. Paste the output of 'apt-cache policy libasound2'
2. State whether you have enabled the hardy-proposed repository in your
/etc/apt/sources.list.
