Just wondering: have you tried removing the theme you're using? Maybe
that's what messes it up...

On the initial install, Firefox starts with the default theme. Anyway, I
have started this in safe mode through the terminal and still have the
same result.

Attached screen shot: here I have duplicated what things look like with
FF3 with my FF2 install (I had to remove 3). Note I have moved the
navigation buttons but even with a no attachments install and no
modifications the bars are gone with the first opening after install.

Here is an update: I installed Firefox in my home folder instead of with
synaptic package manager and everything seems to work fine. This
increases my suspicions that there is a corrupt file somewhere in the
Linux system.

Paul, can you send us a screenshot of the firefox window, to get an idea of
your problem?
Have you tried right-clicking anywhere on the Navigation toolbar and selecting
'customize'?
I see that you have also installed #241090, do you generally have problems with
firefox on your system?
