Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mplayer

In a prior release, I could use my joystick with mplayer to control
play/pause, volume etc. At some point, this stopped working. Worst
thing is it fails silently, you don't get any message like "couldn't
find /dev/input/js0", "joystick support disabled", etc. It just doesn't
work.

I dug around and found out that mplayer doesn't compile joystick support
by default, it must be enabled with the "--enable-joystick" argument for
./configure. I compiled myself with this option and it works perfectly
now. Is there any intentional reason the version of mplayer in the
Ubuntu repos (Gutsy, Hardy) isn't compiled with it? I can't find any
reason for it on the mplayer mailing list, so if this is low-risk it'd
be nice if it were fixed in Ubuntu's versions.

** Affects: mplayer (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
