It seems related to a locale issue : if I run
$ LANG=C dvdrip
then, when extracting the dvd title, the ifo is correctly copied and vobsub
works.

I'm getting the same problem, but I don't have access to the dvd anymore, and I
don't wanna have to burn it just to get the vobsub file.
I mounted the dvd using Gmount and it got the same error, then I tried with
Archive Mounter but couldn't find where was the ISO mounted.

I've been working on this too. The problem seems to be that the DVD
needs to be mounted before you start ripping. If you just insert the DVD
and rip it, dvd::rip does not copy the ifo files to the correct place.
If you make sure the DVD is mounted first then it will copy the ifo
files and vobsub
What worked for me was to copy the .ifo files manually from the DVD to
the tmp/ifo/ directory.

Confirmed, I have exactly the same problem. According to this
http://www2.exit1.org/archive/dvdrip-users/2007-07/msg2.html the
problem is a variable which is not populated correctly when dealing with
hard-disk dumps or loopback mounted images instead of real DVD's
