I have upgraded to the release version of Karmic + patches and the
applet continues to work correctly (as well as the Fn-F5/F6 buttons) and
has AFAIK since Jaunty Alpha 5.
I do not have a patched version of 8.10 to see if the regression ever
got fixed but I guess it is getting close to the end of
Since this report have a long time without activity, could you check (if
is possible) in latest version included in Karmic if this issue is still

This 7.10 regression is now fixed in 9.04 Jaunty Alpha 5 but remains
broken on Intrepid 8.10. Is there some way to get the fix into the 8.10
updates?

On my Sony Vaio FS840/W, the panel brightness control worked in 8.04 but
does not work at all in latest and greatest 8.10 beta. This machine has
an Intel Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller.

intrepid nversion (but i386) on an Asus 900 and the applet works fine

Still not working with latest updates today (this is a regression from
8.04 where it worked). Per above I can control the brightness via
/etc/acpi/sonybright.sh, so my impression is that it is related to the
panel "Brightness Applet", perhaps not the gnome-panel itself.
If someone can provide with
not a gnome-panel issue, could be a gnome-power-manager or acpi one.
