Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ttf-freefont

Summary: At standard 10 and 12 points, FreeMono seems to suffer from
strange hinting that renders the result blurry and almost illegible. I
would think that this phenomenon might be related to the hinting engine
as a cursory examination using Fontforge doesn't appear to show anything
critically wrong. This also doesn't appear bound to the various
sharpening techniques such as smoothing and its ilk. FreeSans and
FreeSerif, while being extremely beautiful typefaces, also seem to
suffer to strange hinting anomalies at the standard smaller sizes.

Frequency: Always ( 5/5 trials for manifestations )

Platform: Ubuntu 8.04 amd64

Additional Information: I have provided a brief analysis of the hinting
issues when compared against their liberation equivalents. Both
families are crafted quite well, so I don't believe this is a
fundamental design issue. Be certain to view the analysis at 1:1 so as
to assure no cubic stretching smoothing.

** Affects: ttf-freefont (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
