I am having the same problem on my laptop: WLAN works randomly on boot.
When it does work, this is what the system log says:

Recently I have got one lucky time where WLAN worked. I immediately got
a dmesg, pressed the WLAN key, got another dmesg, pressed the WLAN key
again, and got another dmesg. I can't figure out whatever dmesg is
saying so here they are, uploaded.

Seems I was wrong...
having two ways for activating wlan:
1. soft-on/off via fn+F5 (wlan, wlan+blue, blue, none)
2. hardware switch (wlan+blue on/off)
while switching on and off often (too fast) via "soft"-off/on wlan
doesn't come up again. Only a HW-Reset via hw-switch brings back
functionality.
When system starts:
WLAN is enabled.
