Public bug reported:

Steps to reprdocue the problem:

1) alias ntp.ubuntu.com to somewhere not working or try to connect to a very 
flaky wireless network
2) bring up your network card in NetworkManager
3) watch it not connect

expected result:
3) woohoo, internet!

I worked around this with this patch:

but I don't think that's the right solution to the problem. :)
