In the meantime, I've found a workaround to keep the systray application from launching. The launcher resides at /etc/xdg/autostart/hplip- systray.desktop Rather than deleting the file entirely, I just changed the permissions to not allow reading: sudo chmod 000 /etc/xdg/autostart/hplip-systray.d

Yes, I agree with Frederik. This icon isn't useful if you don't print or do something with your HP printer. I can access the HP status easily by clicking on System -> Preferences -> HPLIP Toolbox. So it would be fine if there were an option to remove the icon from the status tray. -- Hide icon i
