I have the same problem
happened after a lockup and a ctrl-alt-backspace...complete reboot does
nothing...plasma appears to be segfaulting for some reason
~$ plasma

UPDATE: deleting .kde and .kderc allows plasma to come back up but all
kde related settings are gone (obviously) including the fix for the dual
monitor right click/background issue which I cant find anymore

Plasma does not start anymore after freeze of computer.
I just came home to discover an error as described above- My puter was
shutdown when I returned home. On reboot, Kubuntu gets as far as the
splashscreen, but then goes black on load of desktop. I confirmed that
while the desktop isnt rendered, it is responding to key and mouse
presses, i.e. it

Is the display black?
If so KWin fails to load and thus the complete login fails as well (plasma
adapts to the status of desktop effects in KWin as far as I know.
