I'm on Intrepid, gedit v2.24.2. When I open php files, I don't see any
syntax highlighting. It works fine with other source files like python
and C though. Someone please look into this.

Until highlighting is automatic (if the gedit developers intend to make it
automatic that is), you can always manually select the source highlight mode
thus:
View | Highlight Mode | Scripts | PHP
It has been noted that this is fixed on Jaunty, therefore you might want
to upgrade or see if
Uh, sorry I spoke too soon it seems. It is not really a problem with
gedit as it seems. I just now found out that the files I'm trying to
create are not getting syntax highlighted. But I have someone else's
PHP files which are getting syntax highlighted right when I open them.
And yes, I tried
Interesting. gedit will apply syntax highlighting automatically to
files with an expected file extension - for example file.php _should_
be highlighted based on PHP language elements. Is it the case that your
files do not have a .php extension and the other files you mention do?

I'm really embarrassed now. Turns out I was writing everything outside
the ?php tags. This should go down in the bug reporting hall of shame
:(

Still a problem for me on 9.04 as well as 8.10 (both fully up-to-date).
Gedit doesn't recognise .R files (kwrite/kate does). How can I
find/apply the fix?

I've not seen the Jaunty release, so the following is just a suggestion.
Syntax highlighting should be based on the file mime type - likewise
when the syntax highlighting is changed the user should be prompted and
asked if they want to update the file type (such that the syntax
highlighting will
