I just wanted to report that I have got the same problem after having
installed Ubuntu 8.10 with the new kernel.
After having put the system on hibernation or stop, when I turn the
computer on again, I have no sound at all (no system sound, nothing).

This is what I was able to obtain (s.a.).
1. and 2. of the chapter 'Reporting sound bugs' gave no output.
I saved the file for the automatic sound collection as './alsa-info.sh',
but when I type './alsa-info.sh --no-upload' in the terminal, it says
'No file or directory'. Can you help me?

The key you're after is called the pipe key. On a UK keyboard, it is
above the backslash (\). It doesn't matter though - you can just do this
instead:
ps aux > processes.log
..and then tell me your user name.

For the second one, log out from your normal gnome session, then switch
to a terminal by pressing CTRL+ALT+F1. At the terminal, log in using
your usual credentials, thn type the following:
ps aux | grep $USER > processes.log
Then you can log in to your GNOME session again (by pressing CTRL+ALT+F7
