Hi TJ- I've spoken with KVM/QEMU upstream developers. They're saying that tap is really the 'official', 'supported' networking mechanism for kvm and qemu, and really what they strongly recommend. vde lacks the testing or support base, so I don't think we'd really want to compile against this in
