I have same problem and I use dual booting system (Ubuntu 8.04 and
Windows XP) from my Dell desktop. Somehow, the second screen displays
same contents as the main one, and the System-Preferences-Screen
Resolution menu doesn't seem to allow the second monitor to display
different contents. FYI,

Using displayconfig-gtk isn't a good idea, and can lead to an even more
broken config. Even if it does give the illusion that it works, it isn't
the correct way to do it. The most likely culprit is having no virtual
screen size defined in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf, which is a known bug.
