Since some time I have the same issue. I don't know for how long,
because I muted sounds for a couple of weeks. When I enabled them back
today, pidgin segfaults when playing a sound announcing an incoming
message. I run Xubuntu 9.04, with pidgin 2.5.5 as a virtual machine on
top of virtualBox

I get the same problem... Pidgin just randomly closes, leaves no message
or error... I tried fixing Pidgin by I fixed it by enabling the XMPP
plugin through toolsplugins in pidgin. No go
I am using Skype most of the time but the problem appears even when

I wonder if this is a same bug or a new one. Pidgin was crashing with
seg fault, but full computer reboot fixed it (no i'm not running
Windows).

I believe I was able to resolve my problem by muting all sounds within
Pidgin. It is probably important to note that every other application on
my laptop can play sound without crashing my system. Hopefully this
helps you as well.
