I get the same problem... Pidgin just randomly closes, leaves no message or error... I tried fixing Pidgin by I fixed it by enabling the XMPP plugin through toolsplugins in pidgin. No go I am using Skype most of the time but the problem appears even when Skype is not running. I tried

I believe I was able to resolve my problem by muting all sounds within Pidgin. It is probably important to note that every other application on my laptop can play sound without crashing my system. Hopefully this helps you as well. -- pidgin randomly crashes with Segmentation fault
