Trying to reproduce situation using intel driver.
Wallpaper change doesn't make xorg memory usage grow, but after few hours of
work xorg uses 2-3 times more memory, than after login (when all startup apps
loaded). I observed even worse behavior with fglrx driver which was caused by
x64 sun jre
Guessing this to be an -nvidia bug so closing the extraneous xserver
task.
If anyone can reproduce the exact behavior on -intel, -ati, -nv, and/or
-vesa, feel free to reopen this xserver task.

the xserver caches pixmaps, that's well known and not a memory leak. If
you can point out a bug somewhere then good, otherwise this bug will be
closed after some time.

xorg memory leak
Well, if the error is indeed related to caching, the bug is that the X
server is unable (or unwilling) to free some of the buffers when running
out of memory. I would suppose that a cache has some kind of limit, but,
as it is now, there seems to be none (nor there is any mechanism to free
the
I've found out!
It's definitely a compiz issue. While changing desktop wallpapers and compiz
turned on, there is a memory leak as I explained in my first post here. As soon
as I disable compiz and change the wallpaper, all leaked memory is freed and
Xorg's memory usage normalizes.
Then, if I
For the record, I was using compiz when I tried to reproduce, so
apparently it doesn't hit everyone.

Are you on x86 or x64? I'm on x64, maybe it's a x64-specific bug.
Tormod, I know you are a Xorg-edger, are you using a newer version of
Xorg?
My version is 1.5.2.

ahem, I guess I am. I am using xserver 1.5.3. Would be nice if you could
try Jaunty, which also has 1.5.3.

Hi there. @Tormod: What logs do you want, exactly? I did not see
anything helpful in any of them, but I'd be glad to upload any of them
you might need.
I am able to reliably reproduce the Xorg (alleged?) memory leak with
your desktop-changing line. I am also running compiz; interestingly,
Ooops. I'm sorry. I did not notice Bryce's message. My fault.
I'm attaching all the requested files to this post. I think there is
nothing customized in my xorg.conf, but I'm attaching it just in case.
Also, there seems to be no specific output in the Xorg.0.log file after
the desktop is changed.

This happens to me too.
Yesterday, I've put an animation for my desktop wallpaper (the fedora's
solar desktop that changes the background according to the time of day),
and in only 10 hours Xorg ate 3.2 GiB of memory. I restarted the X, and
after another 3 hours, Xorg was already eating 700 MiB
Are you using compiz (desktop effects)? I am not able to reproduce on
xserver-xorg-video-ati, using this line:
while sleep 5; do pic=$(xscreensaver-getimage-file --name /media/DATA/photos
2/dev/null); gconftool-2 --set /desktop/gnome/background/picture_filename
--type string $pic ; done

Yes, I'm using compiz. Why? Is this a compiz issue? I've heard that it
has some leaks...

I notice there is a Nvidia task for this bug. I can't recreate this
problem at all using the Nvidia drivers. In fact, after switching the
wallpaper many times, Xorg ended up using slightly less memory than when
I started.

Hi cepe,
Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log
file from after reproducing this issue. If you've made any customizations to
your /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

I have found that the same behavior is triggered by hugin when
compositing large panoramas. The error seems related to generic
manipulation of very big images, not specifically by changing the
desktop wallpaper.
Any ideas on this topic?
