I experienced the same doing an apt-get upgrade from CLI on Xubuntu Intrepid
with kernel 2.6.27-2-generic.
Unlike the previous poster I already had CUPS running.

The indicated error in the jockey-frontend seems to be caused by
jockey-backend script not finishing it's initialization stage, thus
doesn't respond to frontend requests.

This found in Intrepid Alpha 5 AMD64 bit Kernel 2.6.27-2-generic while
trying to install nVidia restricted drivers for nVidia Geoforce 7600 GS
card. On initial attempt to install, Unable to report message displayed
(see attachment) and software backport updates not enabled. These were

I get this bug too in 8.10 Xubuntu, installed using alternate installer.
It was the daily build from 31/08/08, with all updates. It seems to
