Thank you for reporting this bug to Ubuntu. Ubuntu 8.10 reached EOL on
April 30, 2010. Hwtest has been replaced with checkbox, and the audio
tests reworked extensively. As a result, this crash doesn't happen
anymore. Thus, I'll mark this bug invalid. Thanks for your reports.

Just seen the same on today's Intrepid. Interestingly, I'd recently (at
least one boot ago) enabled the "use mic as output" option to use my
second headphone jack as an audio output. This may well be coincidence.

The same happened to me, after an upgrade from 8.04.
During the audio test, I heard the sound then the app crashed.
I append user.log, if it can be useful.

I got this also, from a very fresh install. The taskbar crash icon came
up as I was starting to run the hardware testing utility, I ignored the
icon and continued, the utility found sound ok. While starting to
submit this launchpad report I found these other comments also
mentioning Hardware Test
Do someone know how I get sounds back in Gnome? Flash sound works, but
system sounds and wmv sounds doesn't work.
