I think I managed to reproduce this problem in the following way:
- open empathy
- immediately mark yourself as offline
- mark yourself as online
error! and the butterfly process remains alive even if you close
empathy, so you have to manually kill the process if you want to connect
again, or you
Pq2son2: If you launch telepathy-butterfly by hand, you have to set the
environment variable BUTTERFLY_PERSIST so it doesn't exit automatically.

bug ? Are you launching telepathy-butterfly by hand or does Empathy
launch it?

Pq2son2: it's look like you try to run telepathy-butterfly manually,
this must be done only for debugging purpose. If you want to debug
telepathy component, have a look at:
