Public bug reported: Hi, I'm using a Medion Laptop (MD 96370) (sold through Aldi) with Intrepid Alpha 4 in Live CD mode and the sound isn't working (it doesn't under Hardy as well). The machine is a dual boot Windows/Hardy laptop and the sound works fine in Vista. The problem may be the same as in Hardy in that I don't think the Intel HDA sound chip is supported well but I understood it was to be fixed in Intrepid so I wanted to give Intrepid a go to see if it had been fixed. Some output that may be of use: lspci -v |grep Audio 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03) aplay -l aplay: device_list:207: no soundcards found...
The alsa-base version is 1.0.16-2ubuntu1. In Sound Preferences, if you click on the "Test" button, the message that is displayed is "audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink: Failed to connect stream: Invalid argument". The speaker icon in the screen header has a red circle with a diagonal slash showing. If you right click the icon and select "Open Volume Control", you get the message "No volume control Gstreamer plugins and/or devices found." I looked in the alsa-base file in /etc/modprobe.d and didn't see any reference to snd-hda-intel but the file date is 15 July 08 so it probably isn't a generated config file.
