I've fixed that some time ago. It should be working if you have the
latest foomatic-filters packages installed.

I upgraded to cups 1.3.8-5 and the error messages went away. But I still

According to this page, Alpha 4 was supposed to use the PDF format for
print jobs (instead of PostScript). There's actually an error message

Some nasty pstopdf bugs were fixed in cups 1.3.8-4, especially one that
caused it to try to write to /var/spool/cups/pdf even if the process
had no write access there.
Which version of the package do you have installed? If older than
1.3.8-4, please upgrade to the latest cups and try again.
