Binary package hint: usplash
I am testing now Kubuntu Intrepid ibex.
usplash 0.5.23
Usplash does not appear when it'd have to do it, and in place of it, monitor
stay off until KDM is displayed during boot. The same when rebooting or going
shutdown.
