Disabling usplash (ie removing "splash" from the kernel commandline in grub)
improved matters for me, although subsequent VT switches don't work properly.
2.4.1 seems to be better in this regard.

Hi,
Here on a Sony Vaio BZ11XN (Intel GMA X4500MHD), I encountered the same problem
:
* Intrepid Alpha 4 worked out of the box (X.org OK from Live CD, install ok,
reboot ok)
* Then I dist-upgraded, and rebooted
* And then black screen (but backlight is on) ; X seems running and gnome
too,
The usplash problem is bug 253076. This bug should be fixed by the new
-intel package in Intrepid.
